1. Added applications don’t have to sit on your profile
Contrary to what the default options for most applications would have you believe, adding and interacting with an application on Facebook DOESN’T automatically mean that it has to clutter up your profile. As well as getting an opportunity to restrict this at the “add new application” stage…


…you can also click “applications” in your left-hand menu at any time, and customize it from there too. Just click the little “edit settings” link next to each of the applications, and you’ll be able to further customize them – you can change who sees them, where they appear, whether they’re allowed to send you e-mails and a few other bits and bobs. Perfect if you’re getting spam from an application in your e-mail – though if you’re being spammed by an app, you probably don’t need it that much!


NOTE: Applications should never ask you to install anything on your PC – if ever an application says something like “Now, to get the full benefit of this application you need to download and install this program on to your PC”, report that app to Facebook (click “about” next to the app on the list, then click “Report Application” on the right-hand menu…)
2. You can change the way different people see your profile
When you add a new friend (or accept somebody who has requested to add you), you get the option of only showing them your limited profile. This is particularly useful if you’re adding somebody you’re not quite sure about, or adding a work colleague (for instance) who you don’t want to see your holiday snaps or the contents of your wall. If you’ve already added somebody but then decide you want to change their settings later, click on “privacy” in the top right corner and you can add people to your “limited profile” (or even “blocked” list) – plus you can click “edit setting” to edit what is actually included in your limited profile as well.


3. Your News Feed is fully customisable too
I often get frustrated because whatever controls my news feed (presumably an algorithm of some kind) has decided that I need to hear a lot more about a certain person – and when I do, I change my settings! You get to your mini-feed settings by clicking on “preferences” in the top right corner of the feed itself. As well as telling your feed to show you more or less about certain people, you can also use their snazzy slider bars to adjust how much your feed shows you about things like photos, status updates, notes, groups and the like.


4. Use friend lists to gather friends together in collections
I won’t spend too much time on the new “friend lists” feature, as I wrote quite a comprehensive post on it when it was released back in December; Needless to say they’re a very nifty way of “grouping” your friends in to lists, from which you can then communicate with them a lot more simply. Your friends will never see what lists you’ve added them to – so don’t worry if you add them to the group “People I don’t like much”, they’ll never know!
5. Most Facebook elements can be dragged and dropped
Because Facebook is built in a fancy, web 2.0 way (lots of Javascript and DHTML, or so I’m told) it’s a lot more customisable than you might at first imagine. Your profile for instance can be rearranged to your hearts content by dragging and dropping elements to change where they appear…


As well as your profile, your left hand menu can also be customised. You can drag things between the top (always visible) menu and the bottom (which is only visible when you click “more”) – you can also drag applications in to this menu from your application list. This can be useful if, like me, you’re always playing on certain applications and want to be able to access them from anywhere.
6. Photo comments can be read an album at a time
One of the big things that helps me save time is being able to see all the photo comments in an album at the same time, without having to click through each of the pictures. It might not seem like a useful feature at first – after all, you usually want to see the photo that is being commented on don’t you? But if you find that people keep adding comments to the same album over and over (as they do in some of the family albums I’m tagged in!), you can save quite a bit of time by clicking “View Comments” at the bottom right-hand side of any album’s main page…


7. Don’t want to be a Zombie? Block the App!
If you’re getting annoyed with the same invitations to the same applications over and over (my personal bugbear at the moment is Texas Hold’em Poker!), you can block the application from sending you any more invites. It’s easy to do and saves you cluttering up your feed with hundreds of different invites to play the same thing – but it still lets you add the application if you change your mind later! All you need to do is click on the application’s name to go to it’s “about” page and then click the little “block application” button on the right hand side. Easy! You also get the chance to do this in your notifications list by clicking the X next to the application snippet, though this only removes the notifications from the list and won’t stop people inviting you still…


8. Poking people lets them to see your profile, and vice versa
Whilst most people think that “poking” is just a means of grabbing another user’s attention, it actually originated as a way for you to check out somebody else’s profile without having to add them as a friend first. For instance, if I was searching for a school friend and found several people with the same name, but their profile photo didn’t help, I could poke them all. They’d all then see that Henry Elliss had poked them, and with any luck one of them would recognise me and poke me back. We could then check each other’s profile for a week and have plenty of time to see if we really were the people we thought we were – so to speak. The same thing happens when you email someone who isn’t a friend – they can see your profile. Unless of course you’ve updated your privacy settings!


Clicking on “Edit Privacy” on the above pop-up takes you to a page that shows a list of people who you have poked in the past – and who can subsequently see your limited profile still! So be careful who you poke, and customise that limited profile too.

Privacy Profile Settings – We suggest setting the Profile Privacy > Basic to “only me” for items: Education Info, Work Info and Profile Privacy > Contact Information to “no one” for items: Mobile Phone, Land Phone, Current Address, Email. You may want to display your website address for advertising.
5. Privacy Application Settings – Each Facebook application has similar settings to those of the Privacy settings. New applications are being added everyday. Its difficult to define a set policy. However, we suggest you remove any unwanted applications and/or limit there settings as required.
6. Privacy Search Settings – Depending on your use of Facebook, you may not want to be publicly visible or you may want to limit what information is available to all users (i.e. your picture, friend list etc). We recommend changing the search settings from “everyone” to “friends of friends”. You may also want to untick “view your friends list”.
7. Privacy News Feed and Mini-Feed Settings – Control what stories about you get published to your profile and to your friends’ News Feeds. You may not want to display information such as joined groups etc. Although, I don’t know how much privacy this offers as friends can view your groups anyway.
8. Joining Groups & Networks – be cautious when joining groups. All users of a group will be permitted to see your profile data. Although, there may be a setting somewhere that restricts this as I did find some accounts that I could not access.

How to Use Facebook: 5 Tips For Better Social Networking

Facebook is a social networking site that is enormously popular, but it can be a frustrating user experience. The design of Facebook leaves a lot to be desired and there are almost too many choices for things to do on Facebook. Also some of the more popular Facebook activities are trivial instead of useful - throwing sheep is an oft-quoted example.
Having said that, there's no doubt that Facebook is a powerful social networking tool. So how can you best utilize it and find the good apps? In this post we aim to find out. We'll be focusing specifically on social activities, rather than the many other potential uses of Facebook (work, brand management, etc).

Tip 1: Update Your Status Regularly

This is a simple thing to do to keep your Facebook profile active. Right at the top of the page there is a place where you can "write something." Usually a comment about what you're doing or thinking. Once a day, or even once every few days, is enough. But update it enough to keep your page interesting.

Tip 2. Use Groups (a.k.a. Lists in Facebook Terminology)

Groups are a core feature of social networking on the Web. To effectively use Facebook, we recommend you set up some groups so that you can filter content. One person who does this very well is our own Marshall Kirkpatrick. Marshall says that he generally scans his Facebook homepage first, then clicks to his groups for family and old friends from school. He noted that "this way most of my time spent on Facebook isn't re-reading the same things I've already read on Twitter."


There is a bit of a trick to setting this groups feature up. Facebook calls this feature "lists," probably to differentiate them from its other Groups feature (which have been usurped by 'Pages' now). Confused? Get used to it, Facebook navigation is awful.
To set lists up for your Facebook account, go to your Facebook homepage and click the "more" link on the left-hand sidebar. You will see a link entitled "Create new list" at the bottom - click on that to create a new group.

Tip 3: Add Your Content From Other Sources (Carefully...)

In this day and age, you are likely creating content in more than a few places on the Web. This ranges from the extreme cases (early adopters who have personal RSS feeds coming out their ears), to those who may just use YouTube and a couple of other niche social websites.
Many early adopters use FriendFeed to aggregate their 'lifestream' of content from multiple sources. Facebook just bought FriendFeed, so expect to see it integrated into Facebook over time. As of now, if you have more than a few content sources and they aren't necessarily the well-known ones like YouTube or Last.fm, then you'll need to use FriendFeed or an equivalent lifestreaming product to aggregate those feeds. But if you find FriendFeed just a bit too geeky (and many people do), then you can adequately enrich your Facebook profile with external content.
One thing we'd caution, which this author took too long to notice: don't pipe your FriendFeed content into Facebook if you aggregate a lot of content into FriendFeed! It quickly overpowers your Wall and will likely annoy the friends you have who also subscribe to your FriendFeed.

If instead of Facebook you usually use a specialist photo site (like Flickr) or video site (like Vimeo), then you'll need to search around for ways to export your files. I use Flickr and didn't find a satisfactory way to export photos from Flickr to Facebook's Photo albums. But via my Twitter network I managed to discovered a plug-in for iPhoto, which allows Mac users to bulk export from iPhoto to Facebook.

Tip 5: Search Out the Best Facebook Apps

Ever since Facebook became a development platform back in May 2007, thousands of apps have been built to add to your Facebook page. As noted in the introduction, these range from trivial (e.g. sheep throwing) to very useful. The best tip here is to find apps that complement your interests.
Our advice is to search the directory for keywords of interest to you. The quality of apps varies greatly and often there are errors (at least I came across them several times when researching this article). When you find an app you like, you can add it to your profile. I added an Art app recently, for example.
You can browse a user's apps by clicking the oddly-named 'Boxes' tab on their profile page.

Five new Safari 5.0 extensions

The recent update of Safari 5.0 includes a slew of practical extensions that enable users to add and customize features of Safari. In the first extension update, we covered how to add extensions to Safari. Before we discuss five handy new extensions, here are a few more quick tips for handling Safari extensions in general.
There are several dozen extensions available for the new 5.0.1 update. If you download too many they can easily clutter your Safari toolbar. Sometimes after adding an extension you might decide to get rid of it. There are two ways to do that:

You can open Safari’s preferences and simply uninstall or un-enable it.

A quicker method for getting rid of extensions all together is to simply right or control-click on the extension’s icon and select Remove Item, which will delete it from the extensions library.

You can also re-arrange extensions by right or control-clicking on the toolbar and selecting Customize Toolbar. After the window drops down, you can move icons to the left or right of the URL and Search fields.
Now let’s turn our attention to an handful of handy new extensions for Safari 5.0.. These extensions can be downloaded from Apple‘s Safari Extension Library. Clicking the download button for an extension automatically installs it in the Safari extensions library, found in Safari‘s Preferences.
However, in my experience so far, extensions might not always work right out of the box. You may have to quit and restart Safari in order for extensions to kick in.

Awesome Screenshot

Diggo Inc’s Awesome Screenshot enables you to capture, annotate, and share screenshots from within the browser. It’s somewhat similar to Diggo’s bookmarking and annotation website and browser plug-in, but with Awesome Screenshot, you can save the screenshots and annotations as PNG files.

If you want to annotate and capture parts of a webpage, it seems better to annotate and then crop the section you want to save. If you try to annotate after you make the crop the annotations don’t act right.
One unique feature of Awesome Screenshot is that you can select and upload a screenshot to Diigo’s server. In turn a link will be created so that you can share it on one of numerous web services, including Twitter, Yahoo Mail and Gmail.

There are a few disadvantages however to using Awesome Screenshot. When you activate the extension, you must close out the webpage in order to quit the extension for that page. There’s no cancel button to get out of the extension.
While there’s an Undo button in the extension‘s toolbar, you can‘t select and move around annotations after you use them. So you need to be pretty precise about where you want extensions to be made. Despite these shortcomings, Awesome Screenshot is a useful extension for what it does.

Snapper

A similar extension to Awesome Screenshot is Snapper. It takes a screenshot of only the visible part of a webpage, not the entire page. So you need to re-size your browser window to capture the part that you want. There‘s no annotation features in Snapper. It creates a JPG file of the capture which can be dragged to your Finder.

While Snapper is not feature rich as Awesome Screenshot,  it’s quick and doesn’t require you to select and draw a box to make screenshots.

Three Handy YouTube Extensions

A Cleaner YouTube

If you’re an avid watcher of YouTube videos, you definitely might want to check out A Cleaner YouTube 1.1. When activated, this extension removes all the typical YouTube distractions so you can focus just on the downloaded video.
When you download and install the extension, there’s no toolbar button for it. It kicks in and works the next time you open a YouTube video. The outcome looks like this:

The only way you can turn it off though is by disabling it in the Extensions preferences of Safari.

Turn Off The Lights

A similar YouTube extension to the one above is Turn Off the Lights. It allows you to darken an entire webpage – most useful for when you’re watching a video. This extension might be the better of the two because you can activate and deactivate it in the toolbar.

YouTubeWide 2.0

And finally there’s YouTubeWide. While there’s nothing unique about watching YouTube videos in wide screen, this little extension automates the the viewing so that every YouTube video watch automatically downloads in wide view. It’s another extension that you enable and disable in Safari Preferences.

10 Solid Tips to Safeguard Your Facebook Privacy

Facebook statistics show that it has 250 million active users each with an average 120 friends. More than 1 billion photos are uploaded every month by its users, over 70% of whom use applications like games and quizzes in Facebook. Unfortunately, most users don’t know the implications of entering personal information, making friends, and playing games on Facebook.
This guide will show what you can (and cannot) do to safeguard your Facebook privacy.

1. Organize Friends in Lists

What do you do when your boss, mother-in-law, or a casual web acquaintance sends you a friend request on Facebook? Use Friend Lists. Friend Lists are the foundation of your Facebook privacy settings. Select Friends from the top menu, and use the Create link to create friend lists like Co-workers, Family, College Friends, etc. Your friends can’t see your lists, so you can name them whatever you like.

Tip: On your left sidebar, all your friend lists may not show up by default. Click More to see all of them, and drag and drop those you want above the separator.

2. Customize Profile Privacy

Click Settings > Privacy Settings > Profile. Select which parts of your profile will be seen by whom.

If you choose Customize in the drop down, you can be more specific. This is where the Friend Lists you created before become really useful.

Also go to the Contact Information tab and choose how you want your contact information to be shared on the Internet.

3. Set Facebook Privacy Level of Photo Albums

On the Photos tab of your profile page, click Album Privacy. Here again, you can use your Friend Lists to set the privacy for each photo album.

Note that your profile pictures go into a special album that is always visible to ALL your friends.

4. Restrict Search Visibility

Click Privacy > Search to set your visibility when someone searches Facebook for people. This is an important way to safeguard your Facebook privacy.  You can also select what will be visible in the search results.

5. Control Automatic Wall Posts and News Feed Updates

Your actions in Facebook such as comments, likes, appear as highlights on ALL your friends’ home pages. You cannot use friend lists here, only turn them on or off.

Go to Privacy > News Feed and Wall and choose whether you want your boss or ex-girlfriend to know that you’re in a relationship.

6. Set Facebook Wall Privacy

Go to your profile page, click Options > Settings under the status box.

Here you can control whether your friends can post to your Wall, and who can see the posts made by your friends.

7. Avoid Appearing in Advertisements

Facebook has two types of advertisements: third-party and Facebook. Third-party advertisements are currently not allowed to use your pictures, but there is a setting to disallow it if it is allowed in the future. Go to Privacy > News Feed and Wall > Facebook Ads tab to turn this off.

The Facebook ads shown to your friends are about ‘social actions’ like becoming a fan of something. You can turn this off at the bottom of the page.

8. Protect Yourself from Friends’ Applications

Go to Privacy > Applications, and click the Settings tab and uncheck all the boxes. These settings control what information about you is visible to applications installed by your friends. By default, these are set to visible. This means that your religious, sexual, and political preferences, pictures, etc. are readily available to one of the million worldwide Facebook application developers, each time any of your friends takes a quiz, plays a game, or runs any other Facebook app. This is obviously a Facebook privacy issue.

This is the most commonly misunderstood aspect of Facebook privacy. These settings control what applications installed by your friends can see about you, even if you don’t install the application yourself.
Why is this important? Because these settings will not change anything about what you are sharing with the applications you install yourself. For that, go to the next step.

9. Privacy from Your Applications

There is no way to control what applications see about you; it is an all-or-nothing affair. Take this quiz developed by the American Civil Liberties Union to check what anonymous application developers can know about you and your friends each time you take a quiz.
The Burton Group’s Identity Blog features the Facebook Privacy Mirror, an application that you can use to find out what applications know about you and your friends. If you really want to see exactly what profile data of each of your friends is visible to application developers, Privacy Mirror shows it in detail.
The only thing you can do is to authorize only those applications you require and trust. Go to Settings > Application Settings from the top menu. Change the drop-down from Recently Used to Authorized. Here you can see all the applications you have authorized to get access to ALL your profile information. Remove the ones you no longer need.

Also check the list of applications Allowed to Post and Granted Additional Permissions to remove unwanted ones.

10. Quitting Facebook? Delete, Don’t Just De-Activate Your Account

You can easily deactivate your account in Facebook from the Settings page. But deactivation will retain all your profile information within Facebook, including pictures, friends, etc. If you want to permanently delete your Facebook account, click here to submit a deletion request. Note that:

1. There is an unspecified delay between submitting your delete request and actual deletion.
2. If you login to Facebook, your deletion request is automatically cancelled.
3. There doesn’t seem to be any way to confirm that your request was completed.
4. Even after permanent deletion, Facebook says that copies of your photos may remain on their servers for technical reasons.

Also, note that once in a while, there is news of a Facebook hack or leak that can expose your information on the Internet. It is better to be safe than sorry by avoiding using Facebook for anything that may embarrass you.
