Everyone’s looking for the best ads placement tips for their blogs or websites to maximize their revenue, yet most of them haven’t found one. Even I have not found the best for myself yet, but I believe the current positioning is nearly the best. After months of testing and researching, I’ve came up with some ideas and conclusions to the new era of Ads Positioning Guideline.
Adsense CTR in 2008: 1.5% – 2.0%
Adsense CTR in 2009: 1.1% – 1.6%
Surprisingly, Adsense CTR in 2010: 0.5% – 0.9%
No doubt this had brought up my attention towards my ads formats and placements and that’s the reason why I did all the testings and researches.
If your ads CTR has not been changing in the last 3 years with this format, you can ignore this article, but I would recommend you to try out my newly found best ads placement and perhaps you will be surprised by it.
From what I’ve been experimenting, image ads and text ads work best when they are placed near to each other. Also, a square ad in the middle of article does attract an amazing amount of clicks. Perhaps you couldn’t accept this as it would somewhat make your blog looks too “ads spammy”, but come on, if your website has a high bounce rate, instead of letting your visitors out for nothing, let them see the ads! Also, one of Darren Rowse’s (a world recognized pro blogger) blog, digital-photography-school.com does have ads in the middle of some articles. Here’s an example: http://www.digital-photography-school.com/setting-up-your-digital-camera-for-hdr-shooting
At the bottom of your article, instead of letting it to be empty, place a related affiliate there to maximize your site’s revenue. Surprisingly the affiliate slot performs much better than the adsense ads I had placed previously. If you insist not to place an adsense ad in the middle of your articles, place it at the bottom of your articles as what has been suggested in the old placement guideline, or try it on the sidebar. However, sidebar ads never work well for me but they seems work like a charm in many other websites.
One thing worth mentioning is that my adsense CTR after applying this ads positioning has gone up from 0.5% – 0.9% to 1.5% – 2.0%.
Remember DO NOT try to place your ads in a way that violates AdSense policies.
If you have an unsolved problem, very often it can be caused by random registry errors that clogged up in your computer. The registry size keeps growing when you use Windows. As it does so, it attracts obsolete and unnecessary information, and gradually becomes cluttered and fragmented. With the growing of the registry, it can degrade the performance of the whole system and cause many weird software problems.
The legacy heat maps and ads positioning guideline
I used the word Legacy, but I’m not saying that the heat map doesn’t work anymore. Rather, what I found was that the effectiveness of the positioning is not as good as before. It’s simply because users have learned the position of the ads, they knew they are ads and where the ads usually appeared, and therefore they would skip it immediate if the ads they saw are too common that they can see the same in almost every blog. However, this is still the best ads positioning guideline for new bloggers and webmasters. The heat map never changes, just that the ways people see the ads have been changing over time.Old Best Placement: 336×280 on Top and Bottom of each article
Currently most blogs are using the large rectangle 336×280 ad box on top (which usually appear immediately after the article’s title) and below (right after the last paragraph) each article. I had used this placement and formats for more than 2 years and here’s what I get:Adsense CTR in 2008: 1.5% – 2.0%
Adsense CTR in 2009: 1.1% – 1.6%
Surprisingly, Adsense CTR in 2010: 0.5% – 0.9%
